Remember New Yorkers in Flanders Fields…

Help us honor the 27th Division’s overlooked World War I heroes

The Memorial Day Foundation has been invited to help place a special plaque honoring fallen Americans in St. George’s Church in Ypres, Belgium – right in the heart of “Flanders Fields.”

Since the end of World War I, this church has become a center of remembrance, featuring hundreds of memorial plaques placed by military units, schools, townships and other organizations.

But although U.S. troops fought in the area under British command, their fellow Americans never placed a plaque for them at St George’s – until now!

For 2026, we will honor the men of the 27th “New Yorker” Division. Nearly 200 were killed near Ypres. Another 1,100 were wounded or gassed; many would suffer the rest of their lives.

Our goal is to raise funds for fabricating and installing the plaque, and to make a donation to the church for its ongoing maintenance and upkeep.

The plaque will be dedicated on a date to be announced in 2026. All donors who contribute $10 or more will have their name included in the printed program for this ceremony. In addition, a list of donor names will be included on a display at the offices of the Government of Flanders in New York City.

Thousands of visitors come to Ypres each year to explore its WWI memorials, including St. George’s Church. Help us ensure that the Americans who served and sacrificed in Flanders Fields are remembered alongside their brothers-in-arms
